So like any good New Orleanian, I was ready for French Quarter Fest armed with my $1.25 for the street car, a hat, sunglasses, a hell of an appetite and Tom Fitzmorris’ FQF guide. There were many of the old favorites, some newcomers and, of course, plenty of Abita. Like everything in this life, there were some hits and some “meh”s and everything in between. Unlike life, there were no misses.
The best of the best for us:
Newcomer Crescent Sausage and Pie Company: Bad Bart’s Jambalaya, secret ingredient-beans
Vaucresson Sausage: Creole Hot Sausage Po Boy, of course the fine gentlemen over at Blackened Out were quick to remind me that Leah Chase demands you call it chaurice, as all other names are blasphemy.
Jacques-Imo’s Slow Roasted Duck Po Boy, nice tender shreds of duck and tasty coleslaw
The “meh”:
Ted’s Froststop Crawfish Pie: a bit greasy and not too much outside of that
Corky’s Pulled Pork Sandwich: I was surprised to see Tom Fitzmorris call this ***, especially with The Joint and others in attendance. My concerns were well-founded as this sandwich was nothing special.
Trey Yuen: Crawfish with lobster sauce–Another Tom Fitzmorris *** that I found just o.k.
The rest (not quite must haves, but enjoyable nonetheless):
Ristaurante Carmelo: Sausage Calzone–pretty good, but there is lots of sausage competition here
Ristaurante Carmelo: Crabmeat Ravioli–This would be higher, but there were only two measly ravioli per $5 serving
Not everything, but a pretty good sampling in a day and a half. Bring your favorites in the comments!
Were you really able to eat all this stuff????Sounds wonderful!
